iEARN

In 2008 iEARN, an organization that connects teachers and students from around the world to do projects that answer the question "How will this project improve the quality of life on the planet?", celebrated their 20th anniversary. One of the things they did to commemorate this moment was create the video above that shares the impacts that the organization has had around the world.  Each country that is involved has their own webpage.  The iEARN USA website is filled with wonderful information including: news, events, professional development, and of course projects.  iEarn offers students a chance to work with students around the world on projects that aim at making the world a better place. As you have seen in the video all projects relate to the curriculum standards. All teachers have to do is find one that fits their classroom.  These projects give a positive opportunity and goal for different cultures to work towards.  While collaboratively working towards these goals, participants learn about other cultures and people from around the world.  It is so important for students to learn about other cultures especially in this time when technology is rapidly growing.  It is important for them to learn about different cultures in a positive light so they develop an open mind.  I hope to participate in an iEARN project soon!

Vimeo

Vimeo is a wonderful FREE website that allows you to upload videos and share them with others.   One of the best features of Vimeo is that you can password protect your videos!

I have used Vimeo a number of times and once the video is uploaded you can share your video by sharing the link with others.  If you video has a password, you must share the password with the people you want to share the video with.  In other words, only people with the password will be able to watch your video.  You can also change you password at any time if you needed to do that.

Here is a short video that shows how to password protect your video once it has been uploaded to Vimeo.

Facebook and Common Sense Media

Once again commonsense media has provided wonderful, practical, and helpful review of the social media site Facebook.  If you click on the link you will see that the review has a quick overview at the top of the page that allows users to quickly see that Facebook is a social media site that is most appropriate for 13 year old's, connects friends, but requires privacy.  This review goes into more detail about what parents need to know, what kids can learn, and what the site is all about.

The BFG and Common Sense Media

There is a great site called commonsensemedia.org that anyone can use to look up the safety ratings and appropriateness for anything you would like to use with your classroom, child, or yourself!

The first thing I searched is the current book I am reading, The BFG by Roald Dahl.  As I have been reading this book I have been wondering whether or not this book would be appropriate for the current primary classroom I am student teaching.  I was pleasantly surprised to find out this book is recommended for 6 year old's and is best used as a read aloud. (Exactly what I wanted to use it for!)

Below is a link to The BFG's book review! Check it out!

Did you know?

This video gets me thinking about technological advances in education and beyond:

I cannot believe that myspace would be one of the worlds largest countries.  I wonder where facebook would rank?  Technology is advancing so quickly and I feel we should incoorperate it into our classrooms.  There are so many great technological resources we can use to enrich our classroom and I hope to explore and share them with you all.
